Loss of appetite, swallowing difficulties and weight loss (reflux was sometimes evident but I did not regard it as particularly problematic) resulted in a diagnosis of Barretts Oesophagus and oesophageal cancer. Within a day or two of taking omeprazole (20mg, once a day) my appetite improved significantly... I also took lansoprazole for a few weeks instead of omeprazole and it seemed to have the same positive effect. It is about 12 months since surgery (oesophagectomy) and I am still taking omeprazole and my appetite is fine. Fortunately my diet is more or less as it was prior to surgery with no food restrictions although I tend not to eat late at night and have reduced my alcohol intake.

Prescribed to counteract any adverse effects in the stomach of varoius other medications administered. I suppose it works as I have had no problems caused by other medications.

I am submitting this survey on behalf of my husband who is the patient. He has been taking omeprazole for many years, could be as long as 20 years. Although I am sure there has been side effects, none have been intolerable and because of his quite rare illness, gastro pararesis, I am sure they have helped with the vast amount of stomach acid he makes. Whether it is still as effective after so long, I am unsure, but as he tolerates it well I think he is quite happy to carry on taking it, and he has complete faith in his Consultant. He did try quite a few drugs of the same type in the early days but this one seemed to suit him best.b

Profile

Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
